There is a number that reframes how you think about a Caribbean beach. A World Bank assessment of marine pollution in the region found that surveyed Caribbean coastlines carried an average of 2,014 litter items per kilometre, against a global average of 573. That is roughly three and a half times the world average, in a sea whose entire tourism economy depends on looking pristine. The Caribbean is, by UN Environment Programme's assessment, the second most polluted sea in the world.
If you have dived or snorkelled here, this may or may not match what you saw — resort beaches are raked daily, and a good dive site on a calm day can look untouched. That contrast is part of the story. This post covers where the plastic actually comes from, why the geography of an island sea concentrates it, what it does to reefs and marine animals, and what is genuinely changing.
Why the Caribbean Specifically
Three things stack up here in a way they don't in most of the world.
First, it is a semi-enclosed sea. The Caribbean is ringed by island chains and continental coast, with limited exchange with the open Atlantic. Debris that enters does not readily leave; currents circulate it and deposit it, often repeatedly, on windward coasts. A bottle dropped in one country can wash up in another and then wash up somewhere else again.
Second, small island states and coastal nations here receive far more litter than they generate. Research on the region repeatedly notes that island states are exposed to concentrations of marine litter disproportionate to their own consumption and population. A study assessing plastic across five Caribbean countries found microplastic in the waters off all of them, and concluded that a substantial share of what reached Antigua in particular had likely been transported by North Atlantic currents, some of it originating in the North Atlantic garbage patch. Islands with almost no manufacturing sector are cleaning up plastic that entered the ocean thousands of kilometres away.
Third, waste management infrastructure across much of the region is under-resourced relative to the volume of packaging now in circulation, and much of the population lives close to the coast or to rivers that reach it quickly. Add heavy seasonal rainfall and the result is predictable: rivers flush accumulated waste seaward in pulses. This is why a beach can be clean on Monday and covered in debris after a Thursday storm, and why cleanups feel like they never finish.
What the Litter Actually Is
The composition is consistent and unglamorous. Plastic bottles are the single most common item found on Caribbean beaches and coastal areas, followed by other single-use items and foam food containers. Plastic makes up the overwhelming majority of marine litter globally — estimates commonly put it at up to 80% of the total — and the Caribbean is no exception.
The sources split roughly between land-based and marine. Land-based means household and commercial waste that escapes collection, litter, illegal dumping, and material carried down rivers. Marine means fishing gear, shipping waste, and — significantly for this region — the cruise and recreational boating sector. Research on Caribbean plastic has pointed to both the maritime and tourism industries as contributors, which is worth sitting with if your trip involves either.
Lost and discarded fishing gear deserves separate mention because of what it does. Nets, traps and line don't stop working when they're abandoned — they keep catching. Ghost fishing gear entangles fish, turtles, rays and marine mammals for years, and monofilament line wrapped around coral saws through tissue as it moves with surge. Divers encounter this regularly, and unlike most marine debris it can sometimes be removed on the spot by someone trained to do it safely.
Microplastics: The Part You Can't See
Everything visible on a beach is on its way to becoming something invisible. Sunlight, wave action, heat and microbial activity break plastic into progressively smaller fragments — microplastics below 5 millimetres, and eventually nanoplastics. Plastic does not biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe; it fragments.
Microplastic contamination across the wider Caribbean is now well documented. One study used queen conch — a bottom-feeding mollusc found across the region and culturally central to Dominican cuisine — as a monitoring tool, and confirmed widespread microplastic pollution of the seafloor at every site examined. Fibres, mostly in the 1,000 to 1,500 micrometre range, were the dominant particle type everywhere, representing between 60% and 98% of all microplastic found. Those fibres come substantially from synthetic textiles: washing machine effluent, discarded clothing, and rope.
Beach surveys along Caribbean coastlines have recorded microplastic densities ranging from a few items per square metre up to well over a thousand, with the highest concentrations near urban areas. The important point is that a beach that looks clean is not necessarily clean — raking removes bottles and caps, not fragments below a few millimetres.
What It Does to Reefs and Marine Life
For corals, plastic causes damage in several ways at once. Physical contact abrades tissue and creates lesions, and research has found that corals in contact with plastic show substantially elevated rates of disease — plastic surfaces carry microbial communities and provide a colonisation surface for pathogens, effectively delivering infection to an open wound. Debris draped over a colony also blocks light, which starves the symbiotic algae the coral depends on for most of its energy.
Corals also actively eat microplastics. They are non-selective feeders, capturing particles from the water column, and they will ingest plastic fragments that are the size of their normal prey. Ingested plastic can occupy gut space, reduce feeding efficiency, and take considerable time to expel.
For animals, the well-known problem is entanglement and ingestion. Sea turtles are particularly affected: a drifting plastic bag closely resembles a jellyfish, a primary food source for several species. Filter feeders take microplastic directly. And plastic surfaces adsorb persistent organic pollutants from seawater, concentrating them, which means an ingested fragment can deliver a chemical dose alongside the physical one. Documented effects in marine organisms include gastrointestinal damage and reduced feeding.
What Is Actually Changing
The regional policy picture has moved substantially. Legislation restricting single-use plastics now exists across much of the Caribbean, with countries including Belize, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica among those enacting bans or phase-outs of bags, foam containers and utensils. In the Dominican Republic, Law 225-20 established integrated solid waste management and Law 98-25 amended it to introduce a phased elimination of foam and single-use plastics beginning in 2026, with a staged timeline for producers.
Fifteen Latin American and Caribbean countries including the DR have signed on to UN Environment's Clean Seas campaign. River bio-fences — floating barriers, some built partly from recovered plastic, that intercept debris before it reaches the coast — are in use in the DR, Honduras, Panama and Guatemala, and they address the specific mechanism that puts most land-based waste into this sea.
The hotel sector has moved faster than governments in some cases, largely because guests notice. Major chains operating in the region have eliminated plastic straws, switched to bulk bathroom amenities, installed water refill stations, and introduced waste sorting. Whether that reflects conviction or brand management is somewhat beside the point — the volume reduction is real, and it happened because customer expectations shifted.
The honest caveat: legislation is only as good as its enforcement, and phase-outs with long timelines and sectoral exemptions have a way of slipping. The DR's plastics timeline is worth watching rather than celebrating prematurely.
What a Visitor Can Do That Isn't Symbolic
The highest-impact item is water. Bottled water is the largest single source of tourist plastic in the Caribbean, and a two-week trip drinking bottled water can easily run to dozens of bottles per person. Bring a reusable bottle and use refill stations — most resorts now have them, and where they don't, large dispensers usually exist. This is not a marginal gesture; bottles are the most common item found on Caribbean beaches.
Beyond that: decline straws and single-use cups by default rather than case by case; keep everything secured on a boat, since wind takes light items off decks constantly; and if you dive or snorkel, carry a mesh bag and remove debris you can safely take — with the caveat that anything entangled in coral or that has become habitat should be left to someone trained, because removing it badly does more damage than leaving it.
Two less obvious ones. Synthetic clothing sheds microfibres in every wash, and those fibres dominate the microplastic found on the Caribbean seafloor — choosing natural fibres and washing synthetics less often addresses the single most abundant particle type in the region. And local beach cleanups run regularly in most coastal towns; joining one for a morning is genuinely useful and is also the fastest way to understand the scale of the problem, because you will fill a bag on a stretch of sand that looked fine from a distance.
The Bottom Line
The Caribbean carries roughly three and a half times the global average of coastal litter and is the second most polluted sea on Earth, largely because it is semi-enclosed, receives debris generated elsewhere, and has waste infrastructure under strain. Bottles and single-use items dominate, everything eventually becomes microplastic, and synthetic fibres are the most abundant particle type on the seafloor. Plastic contact raises coral disease rates and blocks light; corals eat microplastic directly. Policy is moving — regional bans, the DR's 2026 phase-out, Clean Seas commitments, river bio-fences — but enforcement is the open question.
