🦀 Meet the Arrow Crab: Punta Cana’s Most Bizarre Reef Resident

Punta Cana’s coral reefs are home to a world of vibrant fish and colorful corals — but some of the most fascinating creatures are also the most unexpected. One of the reef’s strangest (and coolest) residents is the Arrow Crab — a spindly, spider-like crustacean with serious alien vibes.

Also known as the yellowline arrow crab (Stenorhynchus seticornis), this little invertebrate may look intimidating, but it’s harmless, shy, and often goes completely unnoticed unless you’re really looking.

🕷️ How to Identify an Arrow Crab

Arrow crabs are unmistakable once you spot them. Look for:

  • A triangular “arrow-shaped” head, which gives them their name

  • Extremely long legs that can span up to 6 inches (15 cm)

  • A body that appears small in comparison, usually golden or reddish in color

  • Bright blue or yellow stripes on their head or legs

  • Long pointed claws that they use to forage in coral crevices

They’re usually found hiding in dark spaces, tucked under ledges, or inside soft coral fans during the day — coming out more actively at night.

🪸 Where to Spot Them in Punta Cana

Arrow crabs love complex reef structures where they can stay hidden from predators. You’re most likely to see them on:

  • Wreck dives near Catalina Island

  • Shallow coral formations around Cabeza de Toro

  • Reef crevices in Bayahibe’s coral gardens

Bring a flashlight and look carefully — they often blend in with their surroundings and stay motionless until you’re almost on top of them.

🧠 Fun Facts

  • Arrow crabs are excellent reef cleaners — they feed on small worms, parasites, and detritus

  • They’re known to cohabitate with cleaner shrimp, forming little reef “cleaning stations”

  • Despite their size and spooky look, they’re completely harmless to humans

  • They are solitary and territorial, often defending a chosen crevice or coral area from others of their kind

📸 Why Divers Love Arrow Crabs

  • Their alien-like appearance makes them a favorite for underwater photographers, especially in macro shots

  • They’re unusual and elusive, offering a thrill for divers who enjoy spotting hard-to-find marine life

  • Their delicate movements and camouflage add a sense of mystery to any dive

At Grand Bay of the Sea, we love pointing them out on our night dives and specialty reef explorations — and once you spot one, you won’t forget it.
