Every dive has a moment where someone points at something and shrugs. The fish are easy — there are guidebooks and everyone learns a parrotfish eventually. It's the other stuff that stumps people: the things that look like plants and aren't, the things that look like rocks and are alive, and the things that don't obviously look like anything.
This is a field guide to the weird stuff on a Caribbean reef, organised by what it looks like rather than by taxonomy, because that's how you actually encounter it.
Things That Look Like Plants
Christmas tree worms are the classic. Tiny spiral cones in vivid blue, orange, yellow or white, growing in pairs out of a coral head — usually brain or star coral. They are not plants and not part of the coral. Each pair belongs to a marine worm living in a calcareous tube bored into the coral skeleton, and the visible spirals are its feeding and breathing structures. Wave your hand near one and every worm in range snaps instantly into its tube. They re-emerge after a minute or so, which makes them the single most reliable party trick on a reef.
Feather duster worms work the same way but bigger and single, with a soft leathery tube and a fan of feathery tentacles. Same instant-retraction behaviour.
Sea fans, plumes and rods look unmistakably like shrubbery and are colonial animals — octocorals, relatives of the stony corals, each branch covered in tiny eight-tentacled polyps. If you get close enough to see the fuzz, you're looking at hundreds of individual animals feeding.
Things That Look Like Rocks or Rubbish
Sea cucumbers look like a lumpy sausage lying on sand, doing nothing. They're echinoderms — related to starfish and urchins — and they process sand through their gut, extracting organic material and excreting clean sediment, which makes them the reef's sand-cleaners. Their defence is remarkable: some species expel sticky white threads at an attacker, and some can eject internal organs entirely and regrow them. Don't handle them; there's no reason to and you'll make one do something drastic.
Tunicates and sea squirts look like small translucent vases or blobs stuck to the reef, often in colonies. Here's the fact worth carrying around: these are the closest invertebrate relatives of vertebrates. Their larvae have a notochord, a primitive spinal structure, which they lose when they settle and become a stationary filter-feeding sac. You are more closely related to that blob than the blob is to a crab.
Neat conical sand mounds on open sand, sometimes with a small fish hovering above, are built by sand tilefish — a fish that constructs and maintains a rubble pile as a home. And a field of thin swaying stalks on sand that vanishes as you approach is a colony of garden eels, each in its own burrow, retracting as you get closer and re-emerging behind you.
Things That Move Oddly
Brittle stars are starfish relatives with long, thin, snaking arms, usually hidden inside sponges with just an arm tip showing. They move far faster than a starfish and are mostly nocturnal.
Basket stars are the spectacular version — a tangled ball by day, unfurling at night into an enormous branching net to catch plankton. Finding one open on a night dive is one of the better sights on a Caribbean reef.
The peacock flounder is a flat fish on sand with blue rings, and the strange part is its face. Flatfish start life as normal upright larvae, then one eye migrates across the skull so both end up on the upper side as the fish settles onto its flank. It is a vertebrate that rebuilt its own skull to lie down. It also changes colour to match the substrate, and will vanish completely if it settles and stops moving.
A thin stick hanging vertically in midwater is a trumpetfish, which hunts by hanging motionless among sea rods pretending to be one of them, and sometimes by shadowing a larger fish to get close to prey. Once you've spotted one you'll start seeing them constantly.
Things You Should Not Touch
Bearded fireworms are flattened segmented worms, often greenish-red, with rows of white bristles along each side. Those bristles detach on contact, embed in skin and deliver a burning sting that can last for hours. They're slow and easy to avoid — the problem is people picking them up. Along with fire coral, this is the reef organism most likely to hurt a careless diver.
Long-spined sea urchins (Diadema antillarum) have thin black spines that break off in skin. Worth recognising for a better reason though: a mass die-off in 1983 killed most of the Caribbean population and contributed to reefs shifting from coral to algae. Seeing them is genuinely good news for the reef.
Upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea) sit on sandy bottoms in shallow water with their bell down and tentacles up, pulsing gently and looking like a strange flower. They're farming — hosting symbiotic algae and lying face-up to the sun, the same trick corals use. They release stinging cells into the water around them, so a shallow sandy patch full of them can cause mild skin irritation without you touching anything.
Small Things Worth Looking For
Flamingo tongue snails are small snails on sea fans, with a striking leopard-spotted pattern. The pattern isn't the shell — the shell underneath is plain, and the spots are living mantle tissue the animal extends over it, withdrawn if disturbed. They eat the sea fan they're sitting on. Don't collect them; the spots disappear when the animal dies.
Lettuce sea slugs (Elysia crispata) are green frilled slugs that look like a scrap of lettuce, and they do something genuinely extraordinary. They eat algae and retain the intact chloroplasts in their own tissue, keeping them functioning and photosynthesising — kleptoplasty. It's an animal that steals the ability to run on sunlight. Nothing else on the reef comes close.
Cleaner shrimp — banded coral shrimp with long white antennae, or Pederson shrimp in anemones — run cleaning stations. Fish queue, hold still, and open their mouths and gills to let shrimp remove parasites. It's a genuine mutualism with an implicit truce: a predator that would normally eat a shrimp doesn't eat this one. Watching a fish hover motionless with its mouth open while shrimp work inside it is among the best things to see underwater, and it costs nothing but patience.
Arrow crabs are unmistakable — tiny triangular body, absurdly long thin legs, pointed snout, usually upside down under a ledge looking like a spider that took a wrong turn.
How to Actually See More
Slow down. This is the whole technique, and it's the difference between divers who see interesting things and divers who cover ground. Most of what's on this list is small, stationary and cryptic. If you swim the reef at pace you will see fish and coral and nothing else.
Pick one square metre and look at it properly for two minutes. Look inside sponges and under ledges. Look at a single sea fan closely rather than the whole reef. And dive at night — roughly half of this list is nocturnal, and a night dive on a reef you already know in daylight feels like a completely different site.
And ask your guide. Local guides know what lives where on their own sites, which is knowledge no guidebook contains, and most are delighted that someone asked about a worm.
The Bottom Line
Christmas tree worms are worms, not plants. Tunicates are your closest invertebrate relatives. Sea cucumbers can eject their own organs. Peacock flounders migrated an eye across their skull. Lettuce sea slugs steal chloroplasts and photosynthesise. Fireworms and Cassiopea will sting you, and flamingo tongue spots are living tissue that vanishes if you collect the animal. Nearly all of it is small, and the only real technique is slowing down and looking at one patch of reef properly.
