Almost every diver who spends real time on Caribbean reefs eventually gets stung by fire coral. It usually happens the same way: a hand goes down for balance, a knee brushes the reef during a photo, a fin tip catches an outcrop in surge. The burn arrives within seconds — sharp, hot, and disproportionate to how gentle the contact felt. Then it lingers for days. Fire coral is one of the most common minor injuries in tropical diving, and it's also one of the most misunderstood organisms on the reef, starting with the fact that it isn't a coral. This post covers what fire coral actually is, how to identify the Caribbean species, what happens biologically when it stings you, what to do about it, and how to not get stung in the first place.
Fire Coral Is Not a Coral
Fire coral belongs to the genus Millepora, and while it is a cnidarian like true corals, it sits in an entirely different class. True stony corals are in class Anthozoa. Fire coral is in class Hydrozoa — the same class as the Portuguese man o' war and a great many small jellyfish. In evolutionary terms, fire coral is considerably more closely related to a jellyfish than to the brain and star corals it grows alongside. This is why the common name is so misleading, and it's why fire coral behaves so differently from the corals it superficially resembles.
The genus name Millepora means "thousand pores," and it's descriptive. Where a stony coral's surface is organized into visible cups (corallites) that each hold one polyp, fire coral's surface is covered in thousands of microscopic pores of two distinct types. Gastropores hold the gastrozooids — the feeding polyps that digest prey. Dactylopores hold the dactylozooids — long, thin, hair-like defensive polyps loaded with stinging cells. This division of labor between feeding polyps and dedicated defensive polyps is a hydrozoan trait, and the dactylozooids are what sting you. On careful close inspection those fine defensive hairs are visible to the naked eye as a faint fuzz over the surface.
Identifying the Three Caribbean Species
There are three fire coral species in the Caribbean, and all three share the same diagnostic look: a distinctly smooth surface with no visible polyp cups, and a consistent mustard-yellow to golden-brown or orange-tan color, almost always with pale cream or white edges and branch tips. That combination — smooth mustard-colored surface with white tips — is the single most reliable field identification. Once you have it, you can spot fire coral from several meters away.
Branching fire coral (Millepora alcicornis) is the most common and the most deceptive. It grows in upright branching forms that can look superficially like a small stony coral, and it's highly variable in shape depending on wave energy and depth. Blade fire coral (Millepora complanata) grows as upright flattened plates or blades rising from a common base, typically in shallow high-energy water, and forms the dense stands most commonly encountered by snorkelers. Box fire coral (Millepora squarrosa) is less common and grows as thicker boxy or encrusting plate formations.
There's one more identification challenge worth knowing about, and it's the reason experienced divers still get stung: fire coral is an aggressive encruster. It readily grows over other structures — dead coral skeletons, sea fan branches, rope, wreck debris, mooring lines — and takes on the shape of whatever it's overgrowing. A sea fan completely encrusted by fire coral retains its fan shape but is now entirely a stinging organism. If you see something with a sea fan's silhouette but a smooth mustard-yellow surface, that is fire coral, not a gorgonian. Colonies encrusting a wreck can look like nothing more than a yellowish coating on metal.
Why It Burns: The Biology of the Sting
Like all cnidarians, fire coral carries stinging cells called cnidocytes, each containing a capsule called a nematocyst. Inside each nematocyst is a coiled, barbed, hollow thread under enormous internal pressure. When something brushes the trigger, the nematocyst fires: the thread everts explosively, punctures the skin, and injects venom. This is one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. A single brief contact discharges thousands to millions of nematocysts simultaneously, which is why such light contact produces such an outsized reaction.
The venom is primarily protein-based, and studies of Caribbean Millepora species have characterized toxins with hemolytic activity (rupturing red blood cells), dermonecrotic properties (killing skin tissue), and effects that increase blood vessel permeability. That combination explains the clinical picture: immediate intense burning, redness and swelling, and often raised welts or small blisters within hours.
The typical course runs longer than most people expect. Burning pain peaks in the first hours and generally subsides over one to several days. As the pain fades it's commonly replaced by intense itching, which can persist well over a week. Published case documentation describes tactile hypersensitivity and skin discoloration at the sting site persisting for weeks after the initial pain resolved. Severe systemic reactions are rare but documented, and can include nausea, vomiting, fever, and difficulty breathing.
What To Do If You Get Stung
First and most important: do not rub the area, and do not rinse with fresh water. Both are instinctive and both make it worse. Rubbing mechanically triggers nematocysts that haven't fired yet. Fresh water causes undischarged nematocysts to burst due to the change in salt concentration, delivering a second dose of venom. Rinse with seawater instead.
The general sequence recommended in the medical literature is: irrigate the area generously with seawater; remove any remaining nematocysts from the skin without rubbing (careful use of tweezers, or gently scraping with the edge of a card, works better than fingers); then treat the symptoms. Vinegar (acetic acid) is commonly carried on dive boats and is often recommended for cnidarian stings, though effectiveness varies by species. Hot water immersion at a tolerable temperature can help with pain, as many cnidarian venom proteins are heat-labile. Topical hydrocortisone and oral antihistamines are frequently used for the inflammation and the itching phase.
Seek medical attention if the reaction extends well beyond the contact area, if there are signs of systemic reaction (nausea, vomiting, fever, difficulty breathing, dizziness), if the sting covers a large surface area, if it involves the face or eyes, or if the wound shows signs of secondary infection over the following days. Anyone with known severe allergic reactions to marine stings should treat any envenomation seriously and get evaluated.

Prevention: How Not To Get Stung
The prevention advice for fire coral is exactly the same advice that protects the reef, which is a convenient overlap. Good buoyancy control is the single biggest factor — divers who can hold a stable position without needing to touch anything essentially never get stung. The sustainable diving practices we recommend on every trip cover this in more detail, but the short version: don't touch the reef, don't grab things for stability, keep gauges and octopus clipped so nothing dangles, and be deliberate about where your fins are, especially in surge.
Exposure protection helps meaningfully. A full-length wetsuit, a rash guard and leggings, or a thin dive skin will stop most casual contact from ever reaching skin. Water in Punta Cana is warm enough year-round that many divers go with shorties or no exposure suit at all, which is comfortable but leaves arms and legs exposed. If you're doing multiple dives over several days, or you're prone to bumping into things while working a camera, a thin full-coverage suit is worth it for this reason alone. Gloves are worth noting as a special case — they do prevent stings, but many marine parks restrict or prohibit them precisely because they encourage reef contact, so check local rules.
Snorkelers get stung more often than divers, and the reason is depth. Fire coral thrives in shallow, high-energy, well-lit water — exactly the zone where snorkelers float over reef with a meter or less of clearance, and where surge pushes bodies around unpredictably. Blade fire coral in particular forms dense stands in that shallow zone. If you're snorkeling over shallow reef, be conscious of how much water is actually beneath you, and be extra careful about standing up in shallow areas.
Fire Coral Belongs on the Reef
It's worth saying clearly: fire coral is not a pest and it isn't a problem to be removed. Millepora species deposit calcium carbonate skeletons and are genuine contributors to Caribbean reef structure — described in the scientific literature as among the most significant reef-forming organisms after the stony corals themselves. It also provides habitat, and its aggressive encrusting growth lets it colonize damaged reef areas quickly.
That role has become more visible as stony corals have declined. On many Caribbean reefs, fire coral now occupies space that elkhorn and staghorn once dominated, and it's contributing carbonate in the shallow zone where those species have largely disappeared. Fire coral is not immune to trouble itself — Millepora populations bleach during marine heat waves and have suffered significant losses in some regions. The sting is a defense mechanism that has nothing to do with divers; we're just large clumsy animals that occasionally blunder into it.
The Bottom Line
Fire coral (Millepora) is a hydrozoan, not a true coral — more closely related to jellyfish than to the brain corals beside it. Identify it by the smooth mustard-yellow to golden-brown surface with pale cream or white edges, and remember it encrusts other structures and takes their shape, so a fan-shaped object with a smooth yellow surface is fire coral.
