The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course is designed for divers who dream of exploring sunken ships, airplanes, and other fascinating man-made structures. These wrecks often become vibrant artificial reefs, attracting an incredible variety of marine life. In this course, you'll learn how to explore these sites safely, respectfully, and with confidence.
In Punta Cana, this is no theoretical exercise. Our local waters hold two genuine training wrecks just minutes from shore: the Monica, a French cargo ship from the 1880s resting in 5 to 15 meters, and a sunken excursion Submarine sitting in only 5 to 7 meters. You'll complete four open water dives on real wrecks, right on our doorstep.
The course is open to any certified Open Water diver (or equivalent). Equipment is included, and PADI eLearning lets you finish the theory at home before your holiday even begins.

Why Wreck Diving is Unique
Wreck diving isn't just about the adrenaline — it's also a journey into history. Each wreck tells a story, whether it's a ship intentionally sunk to create a reef or an old vessel claimed by the sea decades ago. These underwater landmarks are home to diverse ecosystems, but they also come with unique challenges such as entanglement hazards, overhead environments, and limited visibility.
Take the Monica. She went down in the 1880s carrying railroad materials destined for the Panama Canal, and today her propeller, boiler, and engine still sit in plain view at just 5 to 15 meters. A few fin kicks away lies a stranger story: an excursion Submarine that once carried tourists, sunk in Hurricane George in 2004 and resting in 5 to 7 meters of water ever since.
Few dive destinations let you read this much history in a single morning.

Skills You Will Learn
Throughout the course, you'll gain the skills needed to plan and execute safe wreck dives. Training includes assessing wreck stability, maintaining proper buoyancy to protect both yourself and the wreck, navigating confined spaces, and using specialized tools like reels, torches, and dive computers.
Across your four training dives you'll map a wreck, run a reel line, and plan a survey the way experienced wreck divers do. You'll learn to spot the difference between a safe swim-through and an overhead environment that demands more training — and to make that call calmly.
By the final dive, planning a wreck dive will feel like second nature: brief, descend, survey, explore, and ascend with air to spare.
Safety and Equipment for Wreck Diving
The course emphasizes safe diving practices, from evaluating potential hazards like sharp edges and strong currents to using the right equipment for wreck penetration. You'll learn techniques to avoid disturbing the wreck environment and ensure your own safety while exploring these historic sites.
You won't be fighting the conditions while you learn, either. The water here stays at 26–29°C (78–84°F) year-round and visibility typically runs 15 to 25 meters, so you can focus on technique instead of cold hands and murky water. All equipment is included in the course.
Practical Dive Training
During your open water sessions, you'll visit real wreck sites where you'll practice navigation, buoyancy control, and hazard identification. Each dive builds your confidence and skills, preparing you to explore wrecks at different depths and in a variety of conditions.
Your training dives take place on our local wrecks. The Monica is a forgiving classroom: her scattered machinery in shallow water — propeller, boiler, engine — makes ideal terrain for mapping and survey practice. The Submarine offers a compact, easy-to-read structure that's perfect for navigation and buoyancy work at a relaxed depth.
Our instructors teach in English, Spanish, and French, and every dive ends with a proper debrief so the lessons stick.

By the end of the Wreck Diver Specialty Course, you'll have the training to confidently and safely explore wrecks worldwide. Whether you're drawn by history, marine life, or the thrill of discovery, this specialty opens up a whole new world of exciting dive adventures.
And there's a local goal worth training toward: the St. George, a 73-meter Scottish-built cargo ship resting at 40 meters near Bayahibe. She requires an Advanced Open Water certification and features on our Bayahibe day trips — for many of our Wreck Diver graduates, she becomes the next big milestone.
