Atlantic Princess - Bayahibe
A former tourist cruise ship, now one of the best first wreck dives in the DR — shallow, full of character, and colonized by coral and schooling reef fish. Visited on our Bayahibe trips.
The Atlantic Princess was a small cruise ship once used by tourists visiting the area. In 2008, it ran aground on the beach during Tropical Storm Fay. The original plan was to intentionally sink the vessel to create an artificial reef and unique underwater environment. However, the Atlantic Princess sank on its own on May 6, 2009, and now rests just 12 meters (40 feet) below the surface near Bayahibe. Today it's one of the best first wreck dives in the Dominican Republic: shallow enough for Open Water divers and even supervised beginners, yet full of character, with coral colonizing the structure and schools of reef fish patrolling the decks. Underwater photographers love the light at this depth. We visit the Atlantic Princess on our Bayahibe day trips, often paired with nearby reef sites.
