St. George Wreck - Bayahibe
A 73 m Scottish-built cargo ship sunk as an artificial reef, now home to barracuda, moray eels, and groupers. A deep-diver highlight visited on our Bayahibe day trips.
Located just half a mile off the coast of Dominicus in Bayahíbe, the St. George is a 73-meter (240-foot) cargo ship originally built in Scotland in 1962. It was once used to transport wheat and barley from Europe to the Caribbean, and was sunk as an artificial reef. Today, this impressive wreck is home to a variety of marine life, including barracudas, moray eels, king mackerels, and groupers — descending along the hull as the ship comes into view is a moment few divers ever forget. Due to its depth of 40 meters (131 feet), this dive site is recommended only for advanced divers: Advanced Open Water certification is required, and it pairs perfectly with Deep Diver training. We visit the St. George on our Bayahibe day trips — for many guests it's the highlight of their Punta Cana dive vacation.
